Dive Area information
Ambon is an old favourite for not only marine life photographers, this deep bay was also a stopping off point for many biologists who named many of Indonesia’s fish species from collections within this area back in the 1600′s. Now Ambon is becoming a new mecca for critter lovers. There are many new and outstanding macro dive sites and some excellent reefs for scenery and there is now a new resort right in the bay of Ambon right next to all the hottest critter diving sites.
Seram is yet another frontier still with fantastic exploratory diving to be had. So far in Seram I’ve found outstanding fishy dives, world class scenic dives, off the charts macro dives and even plenty of great shallow reefs for easy dives or even snorkelling. All this was only with a few days exploring and with lots more time diving this area coming soon we’re sure make sure that this becomes yet another off the beaten track destination for a more discerning diver wanting to get away from the masses of dive boats starting to crowd some parts of Indonesia. To give an idea of the kind of reefs we’ve been diving around Seram:
Sea Mounts – One particular sea mount we came across a fantastic submerged reef densely packed with fish and colourful coral outcrops that would make any underwater photographer want to go back for more.
Walls – A gorgeous wall covered in orange and pastel coloured soft corals, black coral bushes, great topographic features and with marine life ranging from schooling jacks to nudibranchs, to 3 different species of pigmy sea horse and areas of reef that come to virtually to the surface just waiting to be photographed… I was gutted I never had a housing for my camera – next time!
Coral Gardens – Lots of fantastic shallow reefs, even great for snorkeling in places with vast expanses of hard coral gardens that slope off into the depths…
Critters – A few top critter sites on black sand with small soft corals, sponges, crinoids and algae patches hiding an array of shrimps, crabs, cephalopods, benthic & cryptic fish species, nudibranchs galore and much much more…
Night dives – Already we have found a whole variety of great night diving spots. So far we have found many of the BIG name wish list critters that photographers and marine life enthusiasts search out most in a range of different sites too.
Not only is the underwater life amazing, some of the islands here are the most idyllic, picture postcard, white sand fringed islands that one could imagine…
